Digestible energy of crude glycerol for pacu and silver catfish Ciência Rural
Balen,Rafael Ernesto; Tetu,Patrick Nereu; Bombardelli,Robie Allan; Pozza,Paulo Cesar; Meurer,Fábio.
The increase in global biodiesel production is originating a glycerol surplus, which has no defined destination. An alternative to overcome this problem is its use as energy source in animal feeding. In Brazil, Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) is one of the most farmed native fish species, whereas Silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) is suitable for production in subtropical region. Considering little knowledge about crude glycerol utilization in feeds for Neotropical fish species, it was evaluated the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) for energy of crude glycerol for P. mesopotamicus and R. quelen. The digestibility and digestible energy content of crude glycerol can be considered excellent even when compared to energy of common ingredients such as...

Current research studied the effect of partial replacing corn by glycerin and essential oils addition in the diet of Nellore bulls finished in feedlot on feed intake, animal performance and three markers were assessed to estimate apparent digestibility. Thirty bulls with average weight 400 ± 34.1 kg and 22 ± 2 months old were housed in collective pens (10 x 20 m2) for 63 days. The bulls were randomly assigned to 3 diets (10 bulls per treatment): CON – Control (without glycerin or Essential® oils); GLY – Glycerin (15% on dry matter - DM); and GEO – Glycerin (15% on DM) and Essential® oils (3 g animal day-1). Three different markers were used to estimate apparent digestibility in the diets: indigestible dry matter –iDM; indigestible neutral detergent fiber –...

Françozo,Mônica Chaves; Prado,Ivanor Nunes do; Cecato,Ulysses; Valero,Maribel Velandia; Zawadzki,Fernando; Ribeiro,Ossival Lolato; Prado,Rodolpho Martin do; Visentainer,Jesuí Vergílio.
This study was conducted to evaluate the performance, carcass characteristics and chemical composition of Longissimusmuscle (LM) of the bulls. Twenty-four Nellore bulls were used in a complete randomised design. The bulls were randomly assigned to one of the three diets containing 0, 5 or 12% glycerin. Final BW and ADG were similar (P>0.05) between the bulls fed with 5 or 12% of glycerin but were higher (P<0.10) compared to the bulls fed without glycerin. DMI and feed efficiency was not affected (P>0.05) by glycerin level. Hot carcass weight increased (P<0.10) when glycerin was fed at 5%. Glycerin level did not affect (P<0.05) the dressing percentage and fat thickness. LM increased (P<0.10) when glycerin was fed at 12%. Dietary...

Mixed crude glycerin in laying hen diets: live performance and egg quality and fatty acid profile Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Duarte,CRA; Murakami,AE; Boso,KMO; Eyng,C; Ospina-Rojas,IC; Matumoto-Pintro,PT.
This study evaluated the performance and the quality and fatty acid profile of eggs from laying hens fed diets containing mixed crude glycerin (MCG; 80% vegetable fat + 20% animal fat). A total of 240 39-week-old Hy-Line W36 laying hens were distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design into six treatments consisting of graded MCG dietary inclusion levels (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5%), with five replicates of eight birds each. Feed intake linearly decreased (p<0.05) with increasing MCG inclusion levels. The percentages of myristic, palmitic, and α-linolenic acids in the eggs linearly decreased as MCG dietary levels increased (p<0.05), while α-linoleic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and ω-6/ω-3 ratio linearly...

The Mutagenic Potential Caused by the Emissions from Combustion of Crude Glycerin and Diesel Fuel BABT
Mazak,Daniel Terruggi; Ávila,Ivonete; Crnkovic,Paula Manoel; Cordoba,Aymer Yeferson Maturana; Pagliuso,Josmar Davilson.
This study evaluated the use of crude glycerin as an alternative of energy generation to replace the traditional fuels. The Tradescantia stamen hair mutation assay (Trad-SH) was applied to study the mutagenic effects caused by the emissions generated in the direct combustion of diesel oil and glycerin in a flame tube furnace. Tradescantia inflorescences were exposed to gaseous emissions from the combustion tests in a fumigation chamber for 30-40 min. The analysis of variance and the Tukey test were applied to compare the differences between six test groups (intoxicated with emissions from glycerin and diesel oil combustion) and a control group. Only one glycerin group showed statistical differences (0.05), possibly due to the complexity of the burning...
